‘The Wasp’ Movie Audio Description Narration

‘The Wasp’ is a tense, twist-filled psychological thriller starring Naomie Harris and Natalie Dormer as two estranged friends whose reunion spirals into a dangerous, deceptive plot that changes everything.
Originally aired on CBS and later broadcast on NBC, the film delivers sustained tension and layered performances.

This was my second audio description project, and as a lifelong fan of thrillers, I was excited to dive in.
At first, I imagined bringing a heightened, dramatic read to match the script’s twists.

“But the craft of audio description demands a different discipline: I’m not the showcase—the story is.
My role is to guide, not to perform over the film.”

My Process :

  • Narrative intent: I aligned with the producers on a restrained, unobtrusive tone—clear, paced, and neutral—so the performances and score remain front and center.
  • Timing and placement: I mapped narration to natural gaps in dialogue and SFX, ensuring descriptions enhance comprehension without stepping on critical moments.
  • Precision and clarity: I focused on concise, objective language that paints the scene without interpretation—what’s seen, not what’s felt—so the viewer builds their own emotional response.
  • Session workflow: Multiple passes for tight sequences, with careful breath control and consistent mic technique in a treated booth to keep edits seamless across pickups.
  • Delivery: Cleans, properly timed for post to lay under dialogue and score with minimal adjustment.

The biggest lesson – and the key to effective Audio Description – is restraint. I pulled back and flattened the delivery just enough to be invisible while remaining present and helpful.

The result is a narration that supports the audience’s experience, lets the film’s tension breathe, and keeps the story in the spotlight.
